Throughout my internship so far, several concepts and skills that I learned from my time in CSUMB business classes came forward. One important concept was business writing, specifically the grammar and writing techniques I learned in BUS 304.

This skill has come in handy so many times throughout the first half of my internship, since I’ve had to write a Newsletter, caregiver testimonials for online publication and had to proofread my CEO and COO’s work. Another concept that I’ve been utilizing are the Excel skills from BUS 299 and BUS 308. I’ve been using these skills to assist my Executive Director in streamlining her excel documents that track the company’s financials, which leads me into the next concept. The skills I learned in Financial and Managerial Accounting have come in handy to me personally, allowing me to read the financial information in front of me and understand it. In addition, it allows me to understand the financial terms that go around while talking about the reports.

Also, basic marketing ideas from BUS 306 have come in real handy. Because of the company’s initiative to increase its social media presence, I’ve been tasked with creating caregiver testimonials that can be posted on our blog, website, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Knowing how to create meaningful content and market it effectively has been important the whole time. Finally, the management skills I learned through BUS 305 have allowed me to look at how the management at Care Partners at Home operates. The professor I had, Tom Jones really drilled the idea of working in teams into our heads throughout the class, and Care Partners really does work as a fully functioning team. It’s awesome to see them in action sometimes!

As far as skills that I wish I had going in to the internship, I only really have one skill that I wish I would have learned. Programs like Microsoft Publisher and Photoshop would have been great to know about before going in. When designing the newsletter and hiring flyer, I had to utilize publisher to create both of those files for distribution. Also, I have been talking to friends of mine in marketing, and they say that both of these programs are vital to understand. However, I am still only halfway through, and more skills and concepts could make themselves known that I need to know.
